I am Back

Hey everyone!

Ok so I have been pretty lax in my blogging entries as of late. I have been a little crazy with 2 jobs, the fundraising, the training and well ...life! LOL

Ok so to recap some of the highlights over the last month. I have decided that my strength will definitely be the run. I am finding it incredibly easy to run to distance. It is more of a mind thing than anything else.

The swim is another thing all together. I am having so many difficulties in the H20 that I think I need to concentrate a lot more on that piece from now till the event.

The bike is what it is. I am getting new clipless pedals that I need to work with but the overall concensus for me is that I should be ok on the bike.

I did my first practice triathalon last Saturday and I finished the course in 1:47:18. We did a 750 yard swim, a 14.8 mile bike and a 3.6 mile run. I had a ton of problems in the water. I couldn't swim with my head in the water and it really slowed me down. I need to get out into the open water and practice that part. I got into the water and I started to go and I had this feeling of impending doom and I had to go with my head out of the water for most of the time. I switched to breast stroke and side stroke and I was ok but it was really hard. If I can get that part down I am going to be really fast. the bike portion went well but I didn't have m ylower gears again which sucked! I got them back about 10 minutes into the ride but I lost too much time. Over all I think I lost about 15 minutes. I can't wait to try again.

the fundraising is going awesome . The Silent auction is blowing up. I have so much going on right now with the auction I am going to have to dedicate an entire blog just to that! I want to thank Anthony Nurse from the Autograph Store and Amanda Miles from Winspire for all of their help! We are 2 weeks away from the event! I also had a really successful poker tournament rasing $270 and garage sale where I raised over $450! I figured I would get maybe $250 from both! So cool.

I am excited for tomorrow because we have our first thursday brick training. Bike and run! Very nice.

Hopefully all goes well!

Been off Blooger for a bit but Im back

Ok so I went AWOL from the blog for a few weeks. I have got a lot further into the training and I think I am getting better. I can swim about 800 yards continuously, go for about 14 miles in 50 minutes and run 4 miles in about 30 minutes.

Recently (yesterday) I went for a swim and I did 2000 yards which was a little difficult but I got through it. I think I need to start going out early, like 4:30 am coming up so I can get in more training. I am killing myself with this schedule though. Between both jobs, the training and the Fundraiser I am going a little nuts!

Track practice tonight. I will update the blog a little more with what happened during my absence.

6/30 Bday Weekend

What can I say? I got a little lackadaisical over the weekend and I really only got in 2 swims. I didn't take the whole weekend off but pretty darn close! LOL

Hey it was my bday!

I am really struggling with the bike. I think that I am going to have to ride the stationary until I get my pedals fixed. The cages are cool but they are a little hard to manage plus one broke. I really need clipless pedals. The swim on the other hand is going very very well. I still suck in the for department but I can really stretch out the distance now.

Not much else to report. I had yesterday off as its my day off now. But I will hit the pool this afternoon. I think I might try and wait to till later tonight. I am taking Shay to work at 4:30 pm then I might run home and hit the pool then go and pick her up.

I can't wait for Thursday's practice. I am going to run tomorrow and bike in the weight room. I hope that translates ok to the real thing.

I have a fundraising meeting today at 2:30 with my coordinator and my marketing guy who is bringing our website administrator. We have also got a street team working for ticket sales. How crazy is that?

Recap of Sunday thru Thursday

So I took a few days off from the blog, mostly because I forgot. I have begun to feel a it better about my training but the nagging pain in my right leg has moved from my knee to my hip and back down to the knee again. I talked to Drew last night and he seems to think its going to jump to the other side eventually from me compensating. The pain is kind of a dull one and it hasn't really gotten to the point where it bothers me on a consistent basis, yet... More to come on this.

Sunday was Father's day and I took it off from training to be with my son. We had a great time. On Monday I had to work so I missed practicing again. I decided that I need to sit down with the coaches and devise a schedule that allows for me to train 4 or 5 out of 7 days. With the other commitments I have it is incredibly hard to fit it in sometimes. On Tuesday and Wednesday I swam. That is definitely beginning to get a lot better. There was a little drama in the pool on Tuesday as it was a little overcrowded. Once it thinned out a bit I was able to complete my laps but it took like 2 hours. I got an uninterrupted swim in on Wednesday. My wind is getting a lot better. I think I could go 200 to 300 without stopping to rest and feel pretty good, 400 to 500 if I was to push myself but I would be dead after. Pretty good with still 12 weeks left to train.

Thursday's coaches practice was more of the same in that area. We did our last of the core exercises (I have started doing them on my own now) and we increased our running length. I think we actually ended up running like 3 miles after all was said and done. I was up near the front in the warm up but when we did the timed 800's my hip started hurting (like a pinching soreness in the flexor) and I had to slow down. I talked to drew about the running or my lack of it duuring the week and he definitely agreed that I need to be running at least 3 times a week. I am going to have to add it in somehow. I think I am going to takeFriday and bike and run but do it inside at the gym. At least I will get some type of activity in. I am missing the Saturday coaches practice so I have to make sure I get in the pool on my own and bike as well.

Saturday 6/20 Swim/Bike

The first brick training was a mild success...

Sort of.

My group started out on the bike and after the Friday off I was feeling very refreshed. I didn't try to get really aggressive and go out with the "Pro" group. I in stead held back a little and I am glad I did. I started out really well. We were going for a loop of about 2.2 miles and it was a good course with a slight kick up in the middle section. It wasn't very steep at all, just enough to get your thighs burning slightly. The ride wasn't the problem. I had a problem with the gears however and they kept slipping back into the high gear.

That made the ride tough.

I couldn't get any rhythm at all and it was incredibly difficult to keep pace with anyone when I had to peddle so much. But that was only the first problem. The real problem was the cages I had for my peddles. First it is incredibly difficult to get my feet into the cages after I took them out to stop. Second the right cage broke which wasn't a problem till the end when I took my right foot out to hit a crosswalk. I have decided that I really, I mean really need a set of clip in peddles. Life would be much easier if I could clip in and not worry about it. I finished ok and with the exception hip flexor strain to the right leg (yes the same one as the knee dammit) I got through it totally pain free. I think if I would have had the bigger gears I could have done much much better.

The swim portion of the ride was totally uneventful. I moved in the intermediate section of the pool and changed coaches. Jill gave some really good instruction and I actually learned a lot. I wanted Ivy to watch my swim stroke to see if I had improved at all but she was busy with the advanced swimmers. I got a better feel for "gliding" acccross the water instead fo chopping through it. I really noticed a difference in my endurance. The last time we were at burgess 2 weeks ago I was gassed after every 50. This time I felt like I could go at an even pace for at least 100 yads without getting tired. That was really cool. It is the first time I have noticed a difference in anything since I started. I can see how people can become addicted to this stuff.

I can't believe I am going to say this but I actually think that the run is going to be my best event. That totally blows me away. The swim is going to be much tougher than I had hoped but I kinda knew it might turn out that way. I have heard so much that swimming for distance in a competetion is much tougher than people realize, especially people that are naturally comfortable in the water. The bik I figured was going to be, well not easy but at least a strength. I think I might be wrong. I can see though that on the bike equipment is really everything.

I think I am progressing along nicely and I am hoping that i start to see dramatic changes to my level of comfort in all three disciplines this week or next week.

I am taking Father's Day off and Monday is going to be a tough one to get in because of work.

Track practice Thursday 6/18

Ah we are back at the track. I have begun to notice that there is a delineation between the overall group in ability. there is about 4 or 5 guys at the top that are pretty fast. I do wonder how many of them will actually be able to do that pace for 6 miles, but they all seem like good runners so I have a feeling that they will be fine.

There is another group (of which I am included) that are just behind the first group but I know from personal experience that the pace we have been setting is way to aggressive. We are working on CORE strength for another week then we begin to push our endurance out a little. I also found out that we should be working on CORE strength after every workout!

YIKES! Hope that mistake doesn't come back to haunt me.

The CORE piece is the hardest but most rewarding part. I have also noticed a difference in my overall flexibility from the yoga which is nice. Unfortunately the CORE is also the piece that is hurting my knee the most. Ivy wants me to go to the doctor but I am thinking it is a little early for that. We'll see.

The fundraising to this point is at $820 I think which is good. I still have people from NASA to contribute as well as coworkers from the pier. I also have my immediate family like my sister mom and dad. Over all I am thinking that it is going to be tight, really tight to hit $3300 by September. But who knows that Silent Auction will be the barometer. A good showing from that and we will be ok. If not then trouble city.

Today I am going to Swim in lieu of missing Monday's workout. I think I might try to swim and rum but I will see how my knee feels. Tomorrow is the coaches practice at Burgess and it is our first brick training. 45 minutes of biking and an hour of swimming. We will see how that goes.

Wednesday 17 Swim

So I feel refreshed and ready to get back to work. I am in the pool today but it was a little bit crowded when I get there so I had to wait. the pool finally thinned out a bit around 7:30 so I could get in . I had to do thumb to thigh drills which I think are designed to get you to finish your stroke. I am on the elite workout but I feel like I am resting too much.

My for is not coming along like I would have hoped. I still feel a little bit scattered and all over the place with my legs but it could just be me. I can't wait to get to the pool on Saturday to see if I have improved at all. I am sure that Ivy will let me know. My thoughts so far are that I am really out of shape and I need a lot more practice in all three phases of the event. But the pool which I had thought to be a strength may not be.

I am hoping to increase my endurance in the pool A LOT more in the next two weeks or I am going to have to change things a bit. Can't have myself drowning in the ocean....

Tuesday 6/16

Well I took a few days off from writing since there wasn'y much to write about. I had to skip a big workout because of the knee. My right knee started to get a little inflamed so I took a couple of days off from the training. I think this might be a nigging problem for the rest of training but I will have to wait and see.

I am biking today. I am thinking about biking out to Kirk park off Meridan which would be about 10 miles. I am not sure. Maybe I will just bike over to Shay's. I haven't got the whole bike training down yet.

I am looking forward to swim practice. I think I should double up since I missed yesterday because of work. The training schedule is a little bit all encompassing which makes it hard to keep up but I am trying to manage it the best I can.

As someone who hasn't really worked out like this in the past I think I am doing ok. I am up to about $600 in donationsbut I need to get some more product for the silent auction. I need to contact a hotel or two to get a donation. Hopefully the Hotel Valencia will be willing to give. I need some big items for my Auction.

Over all I think I am doing just ok for my first 2 weeks. I need to do much better. Much Better

Thursday Night Coaches Practice 6/11

Wow what can I say about this.

Today was hard, very hard.

The scary part is that is was only the second Thursday practice. they only get harder.

We did some more running which wasn't too bad but the CORE exercises were murder. I am realizing that I need to practice A LOT more on the stuff we do there. I am beginning to think that the training calendar we have been given is just a guide. I am thinking that i will need to add a bit to each day. I feel ok today which is good. I am not to sore so the stretching and workouts are definitely working. There is a little pain in my right knee where the bursa sac is in the front of the knee below the knee cap. Time for RICE (Rest, Ice, Compression and Elevation). I iced my knee then elevated it for most of the night. It definitely feels better this morning.

Thursday was tough but not so much so that I don't want to do it again. I think I just have to keep pushing myself further. It is a little wierd having only myself to answer too though.

I am responsible,

huh,

who would have thought?

Tomorrow is a rest Day. Ahh Rest... I'll probably run a little anyway.

Back in the pool 6/10

I was back in the pool for yet another swim today. It was pretty nice actually. I have already begun to notice my wind coming back to me in the pool. I should say though that when I push myself i definitely get a bit of the wheezes, no bueno. That is me paying for past sins but whatever can't change that.

I am really liking swimming with the appropriate gear. the swim cap definitely helps with the drag and the goggles are awesome. The jammers really cut down on the amount of drag I was feeling at Burgess.

I do worry a little that there is not a huge amount of running in the program yet but oh well, I am sure its coming.

Day 6 My first foray on the bike 6/9

Ahh the bike, my old friend. I hadn't ridden in about a year (thanks knee) so I was pretty timid about getting back in the sadle. Ralph actually gave me a jersey and bike shorts which fit perfectly so I got to save some money there, awesome. The bike was all tuned up thanks to the guys at Calamar Bikes. I got home about 7 and changed and took off. I went for about 30 minutes instead of 40 but I went at Level 3 instead of Level 1 so I made up for the difference. One thing I have noticed, All of this stuff is much easier when you have other people to train with . It was a little boring and lonely on the bike but it was also nice to see that I remembered how to pedal, lol.

I stopped at the end of my ride and got some Jamba Juice which was a nice treat if not an entirely healthy choice. Funny note I got in and wasn't too gassed just a little out odf biking shape but I weighed my self and I was down to 193 from 201. I am beginning to think that there may be something wron with the scale I am using but whatever. People have told me that muscle weighs more than fat which I knew. But there is no way I have gained 7 or 8 pounds of muscle in 6 days or lost 6 or 7 pounds of fat in 3, who knows.

I really need to write down the core excersises we are doing at the next practice. With the exception of the high knees, the dips, and the butt kicks I am having a hard time remembering what else we have done. Mostly there is a bunch of the Yoga stretches that helped out a lot but I can't remember them for the life of me! I go back in the pool tonight and I am interested to see the progression of how my breathing does. I am hoping that by the 4th or 5th time in the pool the laps get a little easier. I am trying to push myself but only a little.

Nutrition wise I hjavd a ceaser salad and some chicken with guac in a tortilla last night. Oh that and the Jamba. We will see what that does to the scale tonight.

Day 4 1st Solo swim 6/8

Edit: I wanted to throw in that I didn't get in the Sunday run just like I thought I wouldn't. I didn't end up getting home from Sacramento and the Uriah Faber fight till almost 1 am. So no training on Sunday. I will try and do the coaches run this sunday but I may have to skip that as well as I might be shooting a movie.

Originally I thought I was supposed to bike but after looking at the training sheet I realized that it was a swimming day. I was a little apprehensive about finding a pool but I soon found that the pool at my apartment complex would be fine. Its 25 yards so it offers a good spot for doing laps. There weren't that many people there which was nice.

I got into my new jammers and got to try out my swim cap. Very cool over all. I did a couple of drills and then free swam. It seemed like my stroke got much better and It was a lot easier to breathe. I figure it will continue to get easier as I continue on in the training process. My body is finally starting to snap back much quicker and I am not feeling the nagging aches and pains I was after the first workout.

Nutrition is becoming more and m0re evident. I weighed myself over the weekend and I gained 8 pounds somewhere last week! I have no idea how that happened but it scared the crap out of me. I am cutting out soda completely and tring to do more salad and fish. I'll try and mix in some chicken here and there but man it is hard to figure out what I should be eating. I have been doing a lot of fruit in the am but I end up skipping lunch. That needs to stop.

I can't wait till we go over nutrition but that isn't for like 3 weeks. I should probably consult with someone that knows what they are doing before then.

Day 3 Saturday Swim and Run 6/6

Well the Saturday practice started out with a groan and me rolling out of bed waaaay to early for a Saturday. I will say though that I got going quickly once I was up. The night before I ate a good dinner. I had grilled snapper and roasted red potatoes with spinach.

I got a couple of power bars and a bagel with cream cheese for the morning. It is weird but after 3 days I have gained 7 pounds, go figure. We started out with a run and stretching. We also did some of the core exercises. I really like the core exercises but they are wreaking havoc on my muscles. We ran a little more ( I need to start running a lot more on my own) and then after about an hour and a half of activity we headed over to the pool.

I realized quickly that I have no idea what the hell I am doing in the pool. I'm a good swimmer and all but no where near the level of a few of the other participants. I think I will do great once we get into the ocean as I have swam a ton in open water. As for the actual workout. Ivy was coaching us and she had some really good drills to get a good stroke going. On a positive note I think I actually improved a good amount in a short time. If nothing else I know what I need to work on. My body is operating as a bunch of separate parts in the water. I need to fix that.

Over all it was a good workout. I have a tone of work to do. Plus I don't think I can train tomorrow with the WEC event I am attending in Sacramento. I have to bike on Monday. Whoo Hoo!

Go team!

Day 2 Rest Day 6/5

This is going to be a short entry.

Its a rest day for us so even though I haven't done much prior to the first workout besides play basketball I am going to rest. I want to keep on the schedule they have set so I am going to.

Plus I am feeling a bit lazy. Not good after only 1 day.

My body actually hurt alot more after playing hoops then it did after last night. My thighs hurt a little and my back is a little sore but everything else feels OK.

On a different note. I did see a Chiro this morning. She did the report of findings and went over cost. There were some major problems in my spine (no kidding right) and I really need to get it worked on but I have an HMO through work and they will not take it so the cost is out of this world. Like 4k for the year or $300 a month.

I can't afford that! Are you freaking kidding.

I wish I could cause my back could definitely use the work. Plus the chiropractor seems really good and dedicated. She is young but I think she knew what she was talking about. In the end it is like most of the experiences I have had with a chiropractor. It was very very informative (this one probably more than most) but too expensive. $60 a visit is just waaaay to much when they want you to come 3 times a week for a month. thats almost $800 for the first month. Crazy! Wish I could go but I can't afford that.

Looking forward to the pool tomorrow morning. We will be doing some running also. I think they call that "brick" training. Two sports in the same day. Good luck to me!! LOL

Oh I am no at $285.00 on my site with 2 checks for $100 each coming.

Sweeeet

Day One: The Training 6/4

Great start to practice. I got there early so I went to get some H2O. Could the gas station be any further away!

Once I got back we were about 10 minutes from starting but we got going right on time. Coach Tom got us going by telling us a bit about what to expect for the night and he went over how we should read the training schedule. I'm still not sure whether I understand it or not but I will figure it out, I work for NASA right? LOL

He split us into three groups:

1. Those that knew the running style he teaches
2. Those that had running experience but not his style
3. Those that had no real running experience

I was going to go into the 3rd group but I ended up in group two. We started out by going for 2 laps so that he could see our running style. I didn't get any tips so I figure I was doing ok. there were a few really good runners and they started out fast.

Bad for me.....

I got a little competitive and went out fast. Luckily there was a woman there that was next to me that started to talk to me and it paced me...well down I guess. I got a good rhythm going and we spoke about her doing other Tris in the past and whether I had or not. Cool girl, Lisa I think.

After we ran a little we went into some yoga type stretches which was interesting. I was much more flexible than I thought. After that we went over and Coach Tom went over the running style we should be using. A bicycle type motion seemed to work a better than the "shuffling" style some of us were using. We did a drill that showed us how we go faster by moving our arms. Pretty cool.

Being that I am not an endurance guy I was impressed to see how some of the mechanics of the sport can help performance like in other sports. We did another couple of laps and once again I had to get out front. I tried to slow down but It was really hard to do. I worry a bit about being able to go at a slow pace and not kill myself in the first few minutes. LOL

After the run we did a pacing drill where we counted the paces we did in 1 minute. The ideal was 85, I was at 98 so I was going too fast. What else is new right?

We then did some core stuff, dips buttkicks, high knees, abs, and side motion exercises. Again I went out way too fast. I was gassed after the first set of buttkicks and high knees. After the High knees it was hard to lift my legs. I got through the drils and actually did ok but it was hard. The abs drill was last and it killed me.

Overall, great night and a great way to kick it off. I am pumped to get into the pool on Saturday. I am NOT pumped to wake up tomorrow.

Day 1 Morning/Afternoon

So here I go. I woke up this morning still a bit sore from playing basketball (damn I'm out of shape). I also have a nagging pain in my right knee. It is in the front to the left of the kneecap. It feels like I ran into something and its bruised but neither is true so who knows....

I am getting a little nervous but the kind of nervous you get before performing on stage. I love doing athletic/competitive stuff but this is the first endurance type event. Running has never been either my favorite or best event so I am a little hesitant but excited nonetheless.

Tonight is basically a forms night with some core training. I am sure that my running form sucks so this should be an interesting night.

Oh I dropped my bike off on Monday and it should be ready this Friday..... So excited!!!

Shoes, shoes glorious shoes

So this is the first of many entries in my journal. I went out to buy shoes this afternoon. I went to Ryan's Sports in Santa Clara and had a pretty good experience. As soon as I waled in the son greeted me like we were old friends. He asked what was going on and how I was doing. I told him I needed running shoes and he asked me a few pointed questions like, "What was I using now?" and "What I need the shoes for?"

I told him and he proceeded to have me try on a few pairs and run in them outside (pretty cool) then try the next on on one foot and run and so on, to get a feel for which was better. I Liked the first ones he gave me, the Asics Gel... and ended up getting that one.

He took them up and gave me a Team in Training discount (10%) and I was on my way. All in all it was a nice experience if not a little expensive one ( $100.00 with the discount). Plus the guy new my stepmom by the shoe she wore! Pretty good.

Well now I've started... no going back.

GO TEAM!!!
